I am often asked how I wrote The Cave. Some wonder, fairly, given that I had no formal training to write a novel, never blogged, nor wrote anything creative longer than a five-paragraph essay in high school. While I have written a master’s thesis and countless reports and plans as a professional geologist, technical is technical. That reader cares little about the story and solely about the bottom line. A novel is different. A novel reader invests in your voice, your story, and most of all your characters, so you had better make the read worthwhile.
Everyone has a story to tell. Many consider the possibility. Fewer advance beyond thoughts of ‘someday.’ Most have ideas that remain swirling, hidden, or simply reluctant to exposure. How can you change that? How can you take a dream to an idea to a published novel to a satisfied reader? Simply speaking, if you can write a sentence, you can write a paragraph. If you can write a paragraph, you can write a chapter. If you can write a chapter, you can write a novel. You get the picture. It’s that easy, as long as you are willing and have patience. It’s also worth it, because when you physically hold your idea and crack it open for the first time, the feeling…well, it’s pretty cool.
